Lando & Anastasi, LLP (L&A) is proud to continue our support of the Discovering Justice Mock Appeal Program. This year, the L&A coaching team includes Partner Craig Smith, Associates Amanda Cardona and Kevin Eckert, and Paralegal Stephanie Stutzmann, who have been working with students from the Brooke Charter School to help prepare them for the Mock Appeal.
The Discovering Justice programs teach students in grades 6-8 about the judicial system, free speech, and advocacy skills. This year’s program is focused on the First Amendment and will conclude with a Mock Appeal on June 1 featuring students acting as appellate attorneys and presenting their arguments to a panel of judges.
Craig Smith noted, “year after year the students come to Discovering Justice ready to learn about the law and challenge themselves in new ways. During the ten-week program, our students have discussed First Amendment issues related to speech within schools and developed strong advocacy skills. We are very proud of them.”
In addition to teaching students about the law and legal system, the Mock Appeal Program helps students practice and hone vital skills such as public speaking and critical thinking.
“The students are doing such an incredible job preparing their cases this year. They are passionate learners and take great care in crafting persuasive arguments to support their position,” said Amanda Cardona. “I really enjoy working with the students and watching them blossom as they develop their voice over the course of the semester.”
L&A is a sponsor of the Discovering Justice Annual Gala, “Connections and Community,” taking place on Wednesday, June 22. This year’s Gala honors the 2022 Discovering Justice Champion of Justice Award Winner, the New England Innocence Project.
