Lando & Anastasi, LLP (L&A) is proud to continue our support of the Discovering Justice Mock Appeal Program. This year, the L&A coaching team included Partners Craig Smith and Eric Carnevale, Associates Amanda Cardona and John Spangenberger, and Paralegal Stephanie Stutzmann, who have been working with students from the Brooke Charter School to help prepare them for the Mock Appeal.
The Discovering Justice program teaches students about the judicial system, free speech, and advocacy skills. The 12-week program concluded with a Mock Appeal featuring students acting as appellate attorneys and presenting their arguments to a panel of judges. L&A Partner Tom Sullivan and Associate Angelyn Larkin participated as judges for the Mock Appeal.
Eric Carnevale noted, “despite the difficulties posed by the COVID pandemic and the challenges of remote learning, the students we mentored from the Brooke Charter School have been incredibly curious, diligent and engaged.” He added, “participating in Discovering Justice has given me tremendous hope for the future of the legal profession.”
In addition to teaching students about the law and legal system, the Mock Appeal Program helps students practice and hone life-long skills such as public speaking and critical thinking.
“The students did an incredible job arguing their cases this year. They learned about free speech in schools and how to craft a persuasive argument to support their position,” said Craig Smith. “I really enjoy working with the students and watching them develop their advocacy skills over the course of twelve weeks.”
L&A is a sponsor of the 2021 Discovering Justice Annual Gala on Tuesday, June 8. The 2021 Annual Gala honors the 2021 Discovering Justice Champion of Justice Award Winner Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healy.
