On September 30, 2022, L&A Partner, Peter Lando, joined an esteemed panel at the UNH Franklin Pierce School of Law. The program, “Impact of IP Rights on Development and Distribution of Novel Medical Treatments,” explored the myriad legal and economic challenges surrounding the issues of how to best develop and fairly distribute novel medical treatments throughout the world. The panel presented an overview of the legal and economic challenges involving vaccine development, worldwide distribution of diagnostics and therapeutics, and some proposals for solutions to these issues.
The panel also consisted of international experts in public health policy and intellectual property law:
Dr. Petro Terblanche, who is Managing Director of Afrigen Biologics, which hosts the global mRNA technology vaccine Hub under the COVAX initiative. Dr. Terblanche played a key part in the design and implementation of South Africa’s biotechnology strategy and has authored over 200 scientific papers and publications on public health.
Richard Wilder, who formerly led the IP Policy Team at Microsoft, and was a legal advisor to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, now a Senior Scholar at the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law of Georgetown Law. Mr. Wilder is focused on international public health law, and has worked extensively in enabling access to drugs, vaccines, and diagnostics with a particular focus on access by affected populations in low- and middle-income countries.
