Prior to joining L&A, Gary led the IP program as Senior Director and Head of Intellectual Property at Evoqua Water Technologies (now part of Xylem Inc.) for nine years. During this time as in-house counsel, he successfully managed patent litigations, trademark disputes, and complex IP transactions, and played a key role in tripling corporate revenues with accelerating profitability. Evoqua grew within four years from a private equity financed spin-off to its initial public offering on the NYSE (“AQUA”), and ultimate merger with Xylem (“XYL”).
At Evoqua’s predecessor, USFilter, Gary’s management role of both IP and R&D encompassed the oversight of IP portfolios during an intensely active phase of approximately 250 acquisitions in the span of five years. The high-quality patents and the robust IP portfolio that Gary and his team built and managed over many years helped USFilter and Evoqua to consolidate its many diverse water treatment businesses into a unified technology-leading and sustainable product and service business.
Gary is a named inventor on more than 100 patents worldwide. His significant contributions to the field of intellectual property include numerous published papers and contributory book chapters. He also frequently gives presentations and participates on panels and webcasts on a range of IP topics. As a member of the Board of Directors for the Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO), Gary helped shape the future of IP and advocate for policies and systems that protect innovation in the U.S. and around the world.
